NEW BUSINESS · TRADES · NOVEMBER 2025
Foundations first. Everything else can wait.
Craig was starting a mobile auto air conditioning business from scratch, with no customers yet and no appetite for spending big before he knew it would work. So the whole budget went on getting the foundations right rather than on extras. Ten months later, they’re still doing the work.
A real constraint, not a cheap one
New business, no customers yet, nothing online. And the entirely sensible reluctance of anyone in that position to spend heavily on something before they know it works.
That deserves a proper answer rather than a discount. The right thing for a business at day one isn’t a watered-down version of a big website — it’s a smaller, sharper one.
Everything hinges on one moment
Someone’s car air conditioning has packed it in. They’re standing next to it with a phone, searching. They’ll make a decision in about fifteen seconds.
Scope the whole site around that one moment and most of the usual website conversation becomes irrelevant.
WHAT WAS COMPLETED
The few things that had to be right
A homepage that answers three questions — what do you fix, where do you come to, and how do I reach you. Nothing between the customer and those answers.
Service pages that match how people search — car air conditioning, hose and pipe repairs, and heavy vehicle, machinery and marine work.
Real place names, not generic trade language — Heddon Greta, Newcastle, Maitland and the Hunter written into titles and content.
Mobile-first, properly — because every single customer is going to find this on a phone, standing in a driveway.
A technically sound base — clean page structure, sensible headings, and pages Google can crawl and understand without tripping over anything.
Room to grow — built so content, extra service pages and an SEO programme can be layered on later without starting again.
THE RESULTS
Ten months later
The searches bringing people in are the ones that matter: “mobile auto air conditioning Newcastle”, “auto air conditioning Maitland”, “auto aircon repair near me”. People with a hot car and a problem, looking for someone who’ll come to them.
Built once, on solid foundations — and still working ten months later.
The site went from appearing in search 101 times a month to more than 2,500, as Google got to know a business that didn’t exist a year ago.
THE SHAPE OF IT
Visibility, month by month
Monthly impressions in Google Search. This is what a properly structured, locally written site does as Google gets to know it — steady, compounding, and built into the foundations rather than bought month by month.
A KEY DETAIL
Mobile-first, and here’s the proof
Every web designer says they build mobile-first. Almost none of them can show you what difference it made.
On this site, mobile ranks twelve places higher than desktop and earns seven times the click rate. Two-thirds of all the clicks come from a phone.
For a business that drives to the customer, that’s not a technical detail — it’s the entire game.
BEING STRAIGHT ABOUT IT
What foundations do — and what comes next
Foundations get you found. They don’t finish the job, and Craig knew that going in.
The numbers show exactly where the line sits. Visibility has multiplied twenty-five times, while clicks have held steady at around ten a month. Being found and being chosen are two different jobs. The first one is structural and it’s done. The second is an ongoing one — sharper titles and descriptions, a Google Business Profile working hard, content answering the questions customers ask before they call.
That’s the right order to do it in. The foundations proved a brand new business could be found online, at a cost worth risking, and they’ll carry every bit of optimisation layered on top. The next step is there whenever Craig wants it.

What this involved
A note on this site. Craig can edit his own website — that’s rather the point. Some copy, imagery and layout may have changed since I finished the work. What’s described here is what I built and why.
Starting something, and not ready to spend big?
That’s a fair position to take, and it deserves a real answer rather than a cheap one. Tell me what you’re starting and I’ll tell you the smallest version that would work — and what it would cost.
